Rooftop Aluminium Slat Privacy Screen Installation – Randwick, NSW
Comfyard was engaged by a strata management company to design and install a custom aluminium slat privacy screen system on the rooftop of a residential apartment building in Randwick, NSW.
The objective was to improve privacy and security while creating a modern architectural finish that complemented the building's rooftop communal area. Due to the elevated location and structural requirements, the project demanded careful planning, specialised installation techniques and strict adherence to safety procedures.
The completed installation features powder-coated aluminium slat screens, custom structural supports and seven matching access gates, providing a durable, low-maintenance solution designed to withstand Australia's harsh rooftop conditions.
Project Summary
Service: Aluminium Slat Privacy Screen
Location: Randwick, NSW
Client: Residential Strata
Project Type: Rooftop Privacy Screening
Project Duration: 2 weeks
Material: Powder-Coated Aluminium
GatesInstalled: 7 Access Gates
Approximate Project Value: $38,000–$42,000
Completion: November 2021
The Client's Goal
The strata committee wanted to transform the rooftop into a safer and more attractive communal space by installing privacy screens around rooftop plant equipment and service areas.
The solution needed to:
Improve privacy
Enhance the appearance of the rooftop
Allow airflow
Provide easy maintenance access
Be corrosion resistant
Withstand strong coastal winds
Require minimal ongoing maintenance
Challenges
This commercial project presented several technical and logistical challenges.
Working at Height
All materials and equipment had to be safely transported to the rooftop before installation. Working several storeys above ground required careful planning and strict compliance with workplace safety procedures.
Wind Exposure
The rooftop is exposed to strong coastal winds, requiring a structurally engineered installation capable of withstanding high wind loads while maintaining long-term stability.
Structural Mounting
The aluminium screens could not simply be fixed to the roof membrane. Custom galvanised steel brackets and structural supports were installed to ensure strength while protecting the building's waterproofing system.
Multiple Access Points
The project required seven matching aluminium access gates that integrated seamlessly with the privacy screens while allowing maintenance personnel safe and convenient access to rooftop equipment.
Delivering all materials to the roof of a six-storey building
Due to the building’s structure, the crane could only be positioned on a section of ground with sufficient load-bearing capacity. Areas above the underground car park, building services, and the nearby service station were unsuitable for supporting the weight of a heavy mobile crane.
Our Solution
Comfyard designed and installed a complete aluminium privacy screening system specifically for the rooftop environment.
Our work included:
Site measurement and planning
Fabrication of custom aluminium slat screen panels
Careful planning and engineering assessment to identify a safe crane location with the necessary boom reach and lifting capacity.
Installation of heavy-duty aluminium posts

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Aluminium is lightweight, corrosion resistant and requires very little maintenance. It performs exceptionally well in exposed rooftop and coastal environments.
-
Yes. Aluminium privacy screens can be custom designed for residential, commercial and strata buildings, provided they are installed with appropriate structural support and comply with the building's engineering requirements.
-
Access gates allow maintenance personnel to safely inspect and service rooftop equipment while maintaining a secure and visually consistent screening system.
-
Yes. Powder-coated aluminium is highly resistant to corrosion and is an excellent choice for coastal suburbs such as Randwick, Coogee and Maroubra.
-
Privacy screens can help reduce wind exposure while still allowing airflow through the slat spacing. The exact performance depends on the slat design, spacing and engineering requirements.
